« Rock and Roll Hall of Illustration ... | Anya Aleksandrova, From Russia With Love »

Artists have always enjoyed drawing the female body. The visualization of nudity moves from suggestive to erotic to pornographic. Since the first cave paintings, there have always been a lot of clichés in erotic fantasy art. But who says that erotic illustrations must be limited to explicit vulgarities or porn images? At Illustration1, we have a passion for intelligent erotica. This selection of illustrations is not only exciting, but also beautiful and surprising.
Erotic images have always been visual attention-getters (and today also excellent traffic drivers). For ages, there has been a loud public outcry against immoral art. Erotic illustrations would ruin society by encouraging free love and other sins. But law has never been well suited to prevent people from drawing dirty pictures. Each new generation must battle with its versions of censorship. No censorship, rating system or parental control is able to stop teens from accessing the "objectionable content”. What is considered outrageous and immoral at one time, might become acceptable later on. In previous centuries, towns had “vice zones”, and that were the only places-to-be for the “slips and failings of human nature” Today, sex ‘n’ drugs ‘n’ rock and roll lifestyles are all over the place, from television, internet to art. You obviously can’t stop people from doing from what they like to do. As Rodin used to say, "There should be no argument in regard to morality in art; there is no morality in nature."
Erotic art is often over-the-top; a lot of these images are based on the biggest stereotypes. The artists don’t seem to take any inspiration from real life. Instead each character is forced into clichés. Many modern day artists and comics illustrators make a nice living selling highly explicit pictures and close up visuals of fantasies - drawing naked manga teenage girls or voluptuous women having sex with monsters or aliens. A lot of the time, the end result is as fake/ridiculous as bad porn: over-the-top erotic clichés and circus-like sexual positions. Plastic-like women are fetishized to an uncomfortable degree. Not exactly our idea of “hot”. But erotic art doesn’t need to loud/cheap/fast or to be stuck in silly sex stereotypes. Scroll down for some real exciting artworks…
